Day 1: A morning departure has us heading into Long Island, NY, toward the famous Gold Coast. This region of Long Island was given its name for the lavish country estates built here during the early 1900’s and immortalized in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, based upon his experiences while residing here. Your first stop is Oyster Bay for a visit to Planting Fields, the former estate of insurance magnate William Robertson Coe and his wife, Standard Oil heiress Mai Rogers Coe. It is one of the few remaining Gold Coast estates on Long Island’s North shore that retains its original 409 acres as well as its historic buildings including the mansion, Cole Hall. It contains many original pieces and furnishings of the Coe family, including the restored Louis XVI Reception Room, and is a showcase of artistry and craftsmanship in its wood and stone carvings, ironwork and 13th-19th century stained glass. Your last stop today is at Sands Point Preserve and Hempstead House, the embodiment of Gold Coast opulence. It is one of four mansions on the grounds of the Guggenheim Estate, which also includes Castle Gould, Falaise and Mille Fleur. The Tudor-style castle served as a summer residence for the family. Afterward, check in to your lodging and freshen up before departing for dinner at one of the popular restaurants in the area. (D)
Day 2: Following breakfast this morning, board your motorcoach for Huntington and Oheka Castle. Once the second largest private home in the country at 127 rooms located on 443 acres, this was the summer home of financier and philanthropist Otto Hermann Kahn. It was the site of lavish parties, where he regularly entertained royalty, heads of state and Hollywood stars. From here, continue north to Centerport and the Vanderbilt Museum. Modest compared to many of the other Gold Coast homes, Eagle’s Nest is a Spanish Revival mansion with 24 rooms built in three stages from 1910 until 1936. Dinner this evening will once again be arranged at a local restaurant. (B, D)
Day 3: After a hearty continental breakfast, we depart for Westbury, NY and Old Westbury Gardens and Phipps Estate. Take a self-guided tour of the magnificent mansion furnished with fine English antiques and decorative arts and its formal gardens. Following our tour, we depart for home with a new appreciation of Long Island and many rich memories of our Gold Coast vacation. (B, D)
