Tour Itinerary

Day 1: An exciting new tour finds us traveling to the Washington, D.C. area, where we will arrive at Mt. Vernon and enjoy a lunch at the Mt. Vernon Inn. Afterward, you will tour Mount Vernon, George Washington’s estate on the banks of the Potomac River. The tour begins with the plantation house, which offers a glimpse into 18th- century life through beautiful gardens, grounds, museum exhibits and programs honoring George Washington’s life and legacy. Later, you will travel to Charlottesville, where dinner and lodging have been arranged for you. (L, D)

Day 2: After breakfast, depart for a tour of Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. No other home in the United States more accurately reflects the personality of its owner than Monticello; it is the autobiographical masterpiece of Thomas Jefferson. Its gardens were a botanic showpiece, a source of food and an experimental laboratory of ornamental and useful plants from around the world. Following your tour, continue to Michie Tavern for a tour and delicious lunch, which is based on 18th-century recipes and is served by a staff dressed in period attire. Michie Tavern is a Virginia historic landmark which served as the social center of its community; it provided travelers with food, drink, and lodging. Experience the tavern’s past through an historical journey which recreates 18th-century life. After lunch, depart for a visit to Highland, home of President James Monroe. Your tour showcases an outstanding collection of 18th- and 19th-century furnishings. In addition to the house, you can explore the outbuildings, gardens and grounds. Enjoy dinner on your own this evening in Charlottesville’s historic district. (B, L)

Day 3: Enjoy breakfast, then check out and travel to Asheville, NC, where you will visit the Thomas Wolfe House & Memorial, an historic house and museum. Thomas Wolfe was considered to be one of the giants of 20th-century American literature. After your tour, check in to your hotel and freshen up before dinner. This evening, you will enjoy a delicious dinner and a show at either the Crest Mountain Dinner Theater or the Flat Rock Playhouse. (B, D)

Day 4: Following breakfast, depart for the Biltmore Estate, where you will spend the day. Upon arrival, you will pick up your headsets for a self-guided tour of the main residence, a chateauesquestyle mansion and the largest privately owned house in the United States. The mansion stands as one of the most prominent remaining examples of the Gilded Age. After a mouthwatering Southern lunch at the Deerpark Restaurant, you will depart for the Biltmore Winery, located in Antler Hill Village, where you will savor complimentary tastings of more than 20 of Biltmore’s handcrafted wines. There will be time to explore Antler Hill Village which features the Legacy Exhibition Space, village green and shops. Dinner is included at a popular local restaurant. (B, L, D)

Day 5: We depart Asheville this morning, taking home the lasting memories of our trip to see the amazing homes in Virginia and North Carolina. (B)
